This blog is my first so I'm not entirely sure what will happen. The purpose is to get some feedback, answer or discuss issues with lifejacket lights. It sounds odd but the I hope no one ever is in the position to need to use one - but from accounts talking to people in the marine industry it can be the simple things which can save lives. Often a light has been enough to get found.
Currently the most of the lifejacket lights have SOLAS approval, even though most lifejactets for the leisure market are not? This is actually not a bad thing, because it should give you the confidence that the light was made to a very high standard. Well that's the idea.
Certainly some of the approved lights have very dubious claims of certification. I can see this as I'm trying to get the SeaSparkTM approved, which isn't easy, cheap or easy. The criteria is strict and a failure in as test means no approval.
The real issue is, would you care? Would you trust something that potentially could save you without being backed up with certification? Lifejaket lights come under the why spend so much when I can buy something cheaper?
